Biograd as regional leader of Mayors for Peace

In the spirit of promoting regional activities taken earlier, executive cities of the Mayors for Peace organization held the First Mayors for Peace Conference on the Mediterranean in Aubagne, France, organized by Granollers (Spain), Aubagne (France) and Biograd na Moru (Croatia).

At the ceremony held yesterday in the newly built museum in Eltz Palace in Vukovar, the President of the Republic of Croatia, Ivo Josipović, and the mayor of Biograd na moru, Ivan Knez, placed the “Peace Stone” from Hiroshima and the brick that survived the nuclear bomb thrown on Nagasaki in Japan 67 years ago.

The Mayors for Peace delegation lead by Mayor Tomihisa Taue of Nagasaki visited Biograd na Moru combining an official with a friendly visit. The Mayors for Peace delegation also visited President Josipović in his official residence on Pantovčak.

Biograd na Moru, situated in the heart of the Adriatic, is one of the 12 cities bearing the title of Vice-President city of the Mayors for Peace Organization dedicated to having a world without nuclear weapons by 2020. The organization counts 5,053 member cities from 151 countries and regions from all continents except the Antarctic.

The anniversary of the fall of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 killing 200,000 people and three days later on Nagasaki killing 74,000 people was commemorated for the first time in Croatia by Biograd na Moru.
